Lingerie - An intimate form of self-expression
Image: An intimate form of self-expression

Lingerie is a type of clothing that has been around for centuries but has only recently become popular in mainstream fashion. It is worn primarily by women and can be seen as an intimate form of self-expression, maybe even more so today with the body-positivity movement.

Lingerie comes in a variety of styles and fabrics, from classic corsets to modern bralettes and everything in between. Many people view these items as a way to express the person's inner beauty and sensuality, while others may view them as an item of clothing meant to be attractive and alluring.

Definition of lingerie

Lingerie is a delicate and often provocative form of clothing, typically made of sheer or semi-transparent fabrics like silk, satin, lace, and mesh. Its purpose is to flatter the body shape and provide an intimate layer between skin and clothing.

-Definition of lingerie
Image: Definition of lingerie

It's intended to create a feeling of femininity and can be used to make a statement of self-expression.

The difference between lingerie and underwear is that the former is made to be seen and admired, while the latter is usually concealed under clothing. Lingerie focuses on presentation while underwear focuses on functionality.

In the past, lingerie was more commonly known as “underwear” and associated with being worn under clothing. Today, many people wear it as outerwear or to assist in seduction.

Overview of the different types of lingerie available

There are many different types of lingerie available, ranging from classics like corsets and bustiers to modern styles like bralettes and babydolls. Here is a brief overview of the main categories of lingerie:

  • Bras – Includes padded bras, push-ups, demi-cups, and more.
  • Panties – Includes thongs, briefs, boyshorts, hipsters, and more.
  • Bodysuits – Full body coverage in lace or opaque fabrics for a sensual look.
  • Nighties and babydolls – Usually short nightgowns with a fitted bodice and loose skirt.
  • Corsets and bustiers – Designed to cinch the waist and give a more curvaceous shape.
  • Camisoles and chemises – These provide a light layer of coverage, usually made of sheer fabric.
  • Teddies – These combine elements of bras and panties for a one-piece look.
  • Stockings and hosiery – Includes stay-ups, tights, and classic stockings.
  • Robes – Made of lightweight fabrics like satin or silk for a luxurious look.
  • Loungewear and sleepwear – Includes nightgowns, pajamas, robes, and more.

We will cover all of these types of lingerie in more detail in the following sections.

History and evolution over time

The history has its roots lying in the 18th century when underwear was primarily used to conceal and shape the body. During these times having your undergarments visible was considered taboo and was often seen as a sign of immodesty.

-Visible undergarments were considered taboo
Image: Visible undergarments were considered taboo

Over time, it slowly began to take on a more decorative form as women wanted something more than basic white cotton undergarments.

During the 19th century, corsets became popular and they began to be used to shape the body and enhance one’s curves. It was during this period that lingerie started to become more of a fashion statement, worn by women for comfort and beauty.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that lingerie started to become popular, with women wearing it as to seduce their partner (or as a fashion statement).

In the late 20th century, the industry took off with the introduction of new fabrics, such as lycra, and more daring designs. Nowadays, lingerie is a multi-billion dollar industry with many designers creating innovative and beautiful pieces for women of all shapes and sizes.

With the rise of social media, lingerie has become even more popular and accessible to everyone — it’s now seen as an essential item for any wardrobe and can be used to create a bold statement of self-expression, or perhaps an easy way to gain attention.

Lingerie and its role in modern life

Lingerie is not only about looking beautiful or seductive - it’s about feeling comfortable and confident in your skin.

-Intimate wear for confidence and self-esteem
Image: Intimate wear for confidence and self-esteem

For many, it helps to boost their self-esteem and allows them to express their personality and individuality. A good example of this is the various role-play-themed items such as french maid costumes.

Bring back the spark

Lingerie can be an escape from reality, a way to step into a different role or persona for a short time. Whether it's a lacy bra and panty set or a flowing nightgown, it has the power to transform and transport the wearer to a different world.

-Bring back the spark of love and romance
Image: Bring back the spark of love and romance

It can be a way to escape the daily grind and the pressures of the outside world and to simply enjoy the present moment. For many people, lingerie is a form of self-care but also indirect care for their partner, a way to feel good about themselves and to boost their confidence and mood. Whether it's worn for a special occasion or just a romantic evening, it can certainly reignite a lost spark.

Of course, being imaginative and playful, lingerie is a great way to spice up your sex life. It can add an extra bit of excitement to any relationship where the desire for "something new" grows with time.

A functional item of clothing

Lingerie is often thought of as a purely decorative item of clothing, something that is worn to feel sexy or to entice a partner. However, it can also be a functional item of clothing, serving a variety of practical purposes.

-Functional item of clothing
Image: Functional item of clothing

One of the main functional purposes of lingerie is to provide support for the breasts. Bras can help to lift and shape the breasts, making them appear more youthful and attractive. They can also help to reduce back pain and improve posture by distributing the weight of the breasts more evenly across the back. Studies have shown that bras don't help keeping the bust firm, so by now it's rather a habitual usage and a desire to look and feel better.

In addition to providing support, lingerie can help to smooth and shape the silhouette. Shapewear, such as bodysuits and waist cinchers, help to create a slimmer, more streamlined appearance by smoothing out bulges and lumps. This can be especially useful for women who are self-conscious about their bodies or who want to wear certain types of clothing that may be more form-fitting.

Lingerie serves a practical purpose by protecting the skin. For example, camisoles and slips help to protect delicate fabrics from sweat and oils that our skin exudes, which can cause discoloration and deterioration over time. Finally, they help to prevent chafing and irritation by providing a layer of protection between the skin and the clothing.

Lingerie as a fashion statement

Lingerie has become a fashion statement. It’s no longer seen as nightwear that women just wear to please their partners, but rather as an item of clothing that they can use to express themselves and their individuality.

-Lingerie is now a fashion statement
Image: Lingerie is now a fashion statement

Having your bra showing is no longer shameful but rather fashionable.

Many fashionistas give credit for that to the singer Madonna and her explicit usage of lingerie as outerwear in her music videos in the 1980s and 1990s.

Women - regardless if they are younger or older, slim or plus size - are embracing the lingerie fashion trend. From bold and daring sets with sheer bras and panties to delicate and romantic designs such as nightgowns and babydolls in lace or silk.

From a designer’s perspective, underwear is often seen as an opportunity to create something unique and beautiful. Many designers focus on flattering cuts, often focusing on enhancing the appearance of the bust, and fabrics that can be used to create pieces that look stunning on any body type, including women who are very athletic or voluptuous and curvy.

Self-confidence and body image

From a psychological point of view, women's lingerie can provide a sense of empowerment for women in a world where they often feel objectified.

-Positive body image
Image: Positive body image

Wearing an attractive set can be an act of reclaiming one’s body and taking back the power from society’s expectations. At least that is the politically correct reason that is given. If asked honestly, many believe it's a matter of self-acceptance and triggering positive reactions by celebrating your own beauty. In simpler terms, getting attention from your sweetheart. After all, a life filled with love and romance is a life truly worth living.

For women with low self-confidence, an enchanting set of intimates can make them feel more attractive, sexy, and desirable than usual. Perhaps even exit their bubble of doubt and self-criticism. Although lingerie is not the only mean to achieve a positive body image, it can be a constructive part of the process.

For others, lingerie is a way of exploring different aspects of their sexuality. By wearing items that are designed to be seen, they can show off their body and explore different aspects of themselves that may have been hidden for a long time. give them the confidence to dress up and express themselves in unexpected ways.

Is lingerie sexy or sexist?

There are valid arguments for and against its usage of alluring intimate wear. On one hand, lingerie can be seen as a way to feel sexy and confident, to spice up a romantic relationship, and to express oneself.

-Is lingerie sexy or sexist?
Image: Is lingerie sexy or sexist?

On the other hand, it can be viewed as objectifying, promoting unrealistic beauty standards, and perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes. We asked twenty women of various ages about their opions. Here are some examples of arguments for and against:

The case for lingerie:

  • Lingerie can make a woman feel sexy and confident, which can be beneficial for her mental and emotional well-being.
  • Wearing is a fun and exciting way for couples to spice up their love life.
  • Wearing lingerie can be empowering, allowing a woman to take control of her sexuality and express her desires.
  • It is a luxurious and indulgent treat for oneself, promoting self-care and self-love.
  • Rather than sexist, It can be a form of fashion, with various styles and designs that can be incorporated into one's overall wardrobe.

The case against:

  • Lingerie can be seen as objectifying women, reducing them to sexual objects for men's pleasure.
  • The associated beauty standards are often unrealistic and can contribute to body image issues and low self-esteem. (However, we are experiencing a big change in this area.)
  • Lingerie can be uncomfortable and restrictive, both physically and mentally if we feel pressure to use it.
  • Lingerie can perpetuate potentially harmful gender stereotypes, promoting the idea that women should be sexually appealing at all times.

As so often, it's about personal choice. We are all different, each with our own preferences and perspectives.

How to choose fit and size

By "right" we mean lingerie that is both comfortable and flattering for the body.

-How to choose fit and size
Image: How to choose fit and size

Choosing the right item can be a daunting task, with so many different styles, materials, and sizes to consider. This is even more true for men that may be shopping for lingerie for their partners.

It needs to look good but also fit well. Whether you're looking for lingerie for everyday wear, a special occasion, or to spice up your relationship, the right pieces can make all the difference.

Choosing lingerie style

Different styles of lingerie are designed to flatter different body types, so consider the fit and function of a piece before buying it.

-Different styles of lingerie are designed to flatter different body types
Image: Different styles of lingerie are designed to flatter different body types

Consider the material; different fabrics have different levels of comfort and durability. Some may be too sheer or too tight, while others may be too thick or not stretchy enough. Comfort should always be the top priority as it is something you will wear close to your skin. The romantic evening that you spent weeks planning should not be ruined by discomfort.

Consider the purpose of the lingerie and how it makes you feel – some pieces are designed to make a sexy statement while others may offer more coverage. Follow your heart.

Choosing a fit

Try on different sizes and styles to find the best fit for you. If a piece of lingerie feels too tight or constricting, it may not be the right for you. On the other hand, if it feels too loose or falls off, it may not provide the support or the shaping that you need.

-Snug or loose? Which fit do you prefer?
Image: Snug or loose? Which fit do you prefer?

It's a good idea to look for lingerie with adjustable features, such as straps or bands that can be tightened or loosened to customize the fit. This can help to ensure that the lingerie fits well and feels comfortable.

Plus-size women often prefer airy garments such as loose-fitting nightgowns and baby dolls. Slender women often prefer snug-fitting chemises.

Don't overthink about "what the correct thing to do" is, but rather what you like and feel comfortable with. Wearing lingerie is not competition, it's all just about you.

Choosing sizes

Shopping online obviously has the drawback that you can't try the garment on. A great way to overcome this is to choose the same size as the panties that you use daily (since these are likely to be comfortable and therefore be of accurate size). However, this works only for items with normal clothing sizes (S, M, L etc) but not bra sizes (32D, 70B etc).

-Use a tape measure if you are unsure about your size.
Image: Use a tape measure if you are unsure about your size.

If you are unsure about your sizes, use a tape measury and consult our sizes chart at the end of this article.

Don't be afraid to try on multiple sizes and styles to find the best fit. Don't force yourself into a size that does not fit you. Size labels are often just approximations.

If you have a very large bust compared to the rest of the body many garments might not have big enough bust coverage (we call it this because they are not real cups but rather covering shawls). In these situations choose lingerie with real bra cups that allow you to choose your specific cup size. These will explained further in following sections.

Choosing lingerie fabrics

Types of women's lingerie

Bras

A bra is an undergarment that is worn by women to support and lift their breasts. When it comes to romantic lingerie, bras can have different styles and designs to be more visually appealing and to create different effects and enhance the overall look.

Pros of bras as lingerie:

  • Variety of styles and designs: There are a wide variety of bra styles and designs to choose from, such as lacy, sheer, and embroidered, which can make them appealing visually.
  • Providing support and shaping: A bra can provide support and shaping for the breasts, which can be important for creating a desirable look for romantic lingerie.
  • Enhancing cleavage: Some bra styles, like push-ups or plunge bras, are designed specifically to enhance cleavage, which can be a desirable feature for romantic lingerie.

Cons:

  • Limited adjustability: The straps and back band may not be adjustable, and may not fit perfectly for everyone.
  • Lack of comfort: Some designs, like those with underwire or overly tight straps, may not be as comfortable to wear for extended time.
  • Not suitable for all styles of clothing: Some bra designs may not be suitable to wear with certain styles of clothing, and may not be versatile enough to wear as everyday lingerie.

Types of bras

There are many different types of bras, each with their own unique set of characteristics and benefits. Some common types of bras include:

Bralette
BraletteBralette #2Bralette #3
Image: Bralettes

Bralettes offer coverage for the chest area, but less actual support than other bra types. Bralettes have no underwire or padding and are made from lightweight fabrics such as lace, nylon, mesh, and cotton. They are sometimes pull-on bras with adjustable straps and closures at the back or sides.

Bralettes are great for women who prefer lighter coverage without the support of more structured bras. They offer comfort while still providing a flattering look. Their light fabric allows you to move freely while adding a feminine touch. While they may not be suitable for more physical activities, like running or jumping, they are great for lounging around in comfort.

When it comes to seduction, bralettes are one of the best options. However, depending on the style chosen, some bralettes are not as provocative as other lingerie items like corsets, garter belts and sexy sleepwear sets.

Pair a lace bralette with a sheer nightgown for an alluring yet tasteful evening look.

Balconette bra
Balconette braBalconette bra #2Balconette bra #3

Balconettes create a naturally silhouette. These bras feature supportive, lightly padded cups that have a slight dip in the center of the cup. They typically have wide set straps and can feature lace or other decorative details along the neckline and sometimes also straps. Balconette bras are ideal for women with a full bust size as they offer more lift than some other styles that don’t flatten out under clothing so the look stays natural.

When it comes to lingerie, balconette bras can be an excellent choice if you’re looking to add a bit of glamour and sensuality without showing too much skin. They offer an elegant yet seductive look that is perfect for special occasions such as weddings or date nights.

For a sexy yet elegant look, wear a balconette underneath a sheer top.

Push-up bra
Push-ups braPush-ups bra #2Push-ups bra #3

Push-up bras provide additional lift, cleavage, and fullness in the bust area. They are made with contoured foam cups or padded underwire cups, and sometimes a racerback style for extra support. Push-ups create an enhanced silhouette with fuller curves for women with any cup size looking to add extra volume to their bust. They are commonly worn by women between 18 and 35 years old, but they also work well on mature women who want to enhance their shape.

These bras are versatile enough for everyday wear or special occasions. While some prefer them as everyday lingerie due to their comfort level, they really shine when paired with formal attire such as cocktail dresses or gowns. The extra lift they provide gives an alluring look that can be hard to resist!

For an irresistable intimate wear look match with lacy thongs.

T-Shirt bra
T-shirt braT-shirt bra #2T-shirt bra #3

T-shirt bras are designed to be invisible under tight-fitting clothes. They feel soft against the skin and typically have adjustable straps so you can customize your fit. They provide just enough lift without feeling constrictive or uncomfortable, making them ideal for wearing during any activity from work to yoga class.

To stay invisible under clothes these bras are intentionally lacking adornments and details suchs as lace and imaginative patterns. Although stylish, they can feel quite boring making them less suitable as romantic nightwear.

Strapless bra
Strapless braStrapless bra #2Strapless bra #3

Strapless bras have no shoulder straps. Their cups will have some sort of reinforcement or underwire to provide support and structure. Strapless bras are best suited to women with smaller bust sizes, as they don’t provide the same level of lift and support that larger cup sizes require.

When selecting a strapless bra, make sure it fits snugly and securely around the entire body so that it does not slip or move during wear.

Though strapless bras are convenient for wearing with tank tops or dresses with thin straps or plunging necklines, they are not suitable for everyday wear due to the limited amount of support. They are most suited for special occasions such as weddings or proms where the main goal is to provide shape-enhancing coverage without ruining an outfit’s aesthetic appeal.

As seductive lingerie, strapless bras are a good choice; offering enticing a "undressed" look due to the naked shoulders!

Try matching with a lace skirtini.

Plunge bra

Also called "U-bra", a plunge bra has a very deep V-neckline, with cups that are cut low and wide apart to make it suitable for low-cut tops, and dresses.

Plunge bras feature molded cups to provide shape and lift, as well as light padding for support, which helps to create a flattering silhouette. The straps are often farther apart in the front to allow for an unobstructed cleavage.

Women with smaller breasts find that this type of bra to give them just enough lift and support to feel comfortable wearing lower cut tops or dresses. For women with larger breasts, a plunge bra can be beneficial because it gives good stability while still providing coverage without having excess fabric and padding in the center. However, too soft bust can potentially fall out on the inner side of the cups.

Plunge bras are not ideal for everyday wear; there is a greater risk that the bust will fal out of place compared to full-coverage or push up bras.

They are great for special occasions such as nights out on the town or formal events like weddings where wearing low cut tops is desired. They also look great when worn underneath strappy summer dresses or off-the-shoulder tops since they provide ample coverage even when wearing revealing pieces of clothing.

Plunge bras can be suitable as lingerie due to their sultry yet elegant style; their design allows you to show off some skin while still feeling covered up and supported at all times.

Mix and match with a sheer skirt or a long nightgown in lace.

Demi-cup bra
Demi cup braDemi cup bra #2Demi cup bra #3
Image: Demi cup bras

Probably the most common bra type. It has an open top and offers less coverage than a full-cup bra. They are cut lower on the sides and have wide-set straps, creating a low neckline that reveals more of the breasts. Demi-cups create a more curved shape, making them ideal for women with smaller cup sizes. They are perfect for those who want to enhance their bust without having too much coverage or padding.

This type of bra offer great support and lift without being overly restrictive, as well as helping to create an attractive cleavage appearance. They are less suitable for women with larger cup sizes or those who prefer more coverage. Demi-cups are good alternatives to push-ups when less "enhancement" is needed.

In terms of suitable occasions, they are definitely a great option for special nights out with your partner as it provides ample curves that create a sensual silhouette - perfect for seduction! Though good as bedroom lingerie, they are even better for every day use.

Try mixing thong panties in same color. If matching panties are available, buy them together!

Full coverage bra

Full coverage bras provide maximum coverage of the breasts, and a more modest and contained look. They have wider straps than demi-cup or plunge bras, and the cups cover most, if not all, of the breast. The cups are often made of three pieces stitched together for extra support and shaping, and have underwires for added bra stability.

These bras are best suited for women who want to minimize their bust size or simply want to feel more contained in their clothing. These types of bras can be especially beneficial for plus-size women or those with heavy breasts. They are a great choice for everyday wear as they provide comfortable all-day support with no risk of slipping straps or spilling fabrics.

In addition to this, they can be used in special occasions like weddings where a woman wants her gown to fit perfectly without showing unwanted cleavage lines from her bra!

Many full coverage bras feature lightly padded cups which give a seamless and evenly round look under clothes while keeping nipples hidden from view.

To use as lingerie, look for attractive designs and patterns and pair with seductive lingerie like sheer nightgowns or robes.

Bralettes for their sheerness and softness and push-ups for their strongly shaping and enhancing abilities.

Lingerie with real bra cups for larger bust and support

Built-in bra cups is a feature rather than a lingerie type. However, they solve a big problem and deserve their own section.

Lingerie with built-in bra cups for big bustLingerie with built-in bra cups for big bust #2Lingerie with built-in bra cups for big bust #3
Image: Lingerie with real bra cups for big bust

Women with very large breasts or soft/mature bust need support. Normal nightwear, such as babydolls and nightgowns, have soft cups or no cup structure at all. They lack meaningful support. They are made for "normal sized bust", meaning they allow for D or E-cups at the most. Soft bust will hang in an unattractive manner while big breasts will simply not fit inside.

Real, built-in bra cups solve these problems. The cups offer the same lift and support as a real bra (assuming the quality is good). The nightwear having these cups intergrated will come labeled with a bra size (32F, 70G etc) instead of a clothing size (S, M, L etc) which means that a size can be chosen that will fit the bust perfectly.

A nightgown or babydoll with real bra cups will create a fantastic silhuette and a beautiful, round-shaped bust.

Pair with lacy panties for a complete goddess-like look.

Panties

Panties (also known as knickers in the UK) are a type of undergarment worn by women to cover the hip and pubic area. Like bras, they come in a variety of styles and designs and can be a great choice for a special occasion.

  • Limited adjustability: Some styles may not be adjustable, which can make it difficult to achieve a perfect fit.
  • Lack of support: Some styles, like thongs or g-strings, may provide less coverage and support, which can be a drawback for romantic lingerie.

Types of panties

Here are common panty styles.

Thongs
ThongThong #2Thong #3

Thong panties are a type of underwear with a narrow waistband and a V-shaped cut at the back. They provide minimal coverage, exposing most of the buttocks. Generally, thongs are best suited for women with an athletic or slim figure because they don't offer much coverage or support. Thongs are usually made from fabrics like lace, spandex, polyester, and silk, which offer maximum comfort and softness. The thin waistband ensures that there's no visible panty line under clothing. As far as everyday wear goes, thongs are not really ideal because they can be uncomfortable and cause chafing due to lack of coverage in certain areas.

Thongs can be great for special occasions since they enhance the shape of the body without being too revealing. They are often seen as seductive lingerie pieces because of the way they hug your curves in an alluring way. Although there’s a wide variety of colors, styles and textures available when it comes to thong panties, black ones tend to be the most popular choice due to their classic look which pairs well with any outfit. Most people find them quite comfortable to wear; however some people may find them restrictive.

Thongs are often seen as must for any wardrobe. It provides minimal coverage while still emphasizing your assets in an attractive manner. They are a great choice for romantic occasions.

G-strings
G-stringG-string #2G-string #3

A g-string is a type of thong but with even less coverage. The design consists of a thin waistband that stretches across the hips and a narrow strip of fabric that extends between the buttocks. In some designs, the strip is made from the same material as the waistband, while in others it is made from contrasting fabric such as lace or satin. The back coverage varies depending on how much material is used in the design; some styles feature a small triangle at the back while others cover only the sides of the buttocks.

G-strings are an excellent choice for those who prefer minimal coverage and a comfortable fit. They are perfect for women with petite figures, as well as those with curves in all the right places. The snug fit accentuates curves while avoiding visible panty lines. For this reason they are also popular among young women. G-strings are usually made from lightweight fabrics like cotton, sheer mesh or stretchy spandex blends.

Depending on design details these panties can be quite comfortable to wear for long periods of time; however, some women may find them too revealing to wear on an everyday basis due to their minimal coverage in the back.

Being quite daring due to their revealing nature they are an excellent option for seductive lingerie pieces when paired with matching bras and other intimate apparel items.

Hipsters

Hipsters panties are characterized by their low-cut, form-fitting shape. They are designed to sit below the hips, providing a flattering silhouette that highlights the curves. This style is most suitable for younger women or those with smaller hip measurements.

Hipster panties have gained popularity in recent years due to their ability to be both fashionable and comfortable. The fabric used in hipsters panties varies depending on the producer, but typically they are made from lightweight materials such as cotton, lace, or synthetic blends. While they may not be as traditionally considered as seductive as other types of lingerie, they can still be made from attractive fabrics and designs that can make them appealing.

Bikinis
BikiniBikini #2Bikini #3

Bikini are a popular style of pantie, and they have a unique cut and shape. They typically sit low on the hips and have thinner sides than classic briefs; this helps to create the classic “cheeky” look. They also sometimes feature a thong back which provides minimal coverage in the back while still being comfortable to wear. Bikini panties are good for all ages, body types, and sizes since they provide more coverage than thongs but less than briefs.

They can be worn as everyday underwear since they provide more coverage than other types of panties. Bikinis are usually made from light weight fabrics such as cotton or lace, which helps to make them comfortable and soft against the skin.

Many bikini panty designs come with intricate details such as bows or lace that add an extra layer of sexiness; these details can help tease your partner while still remaining classy and sophisticated. Bikini panties are often seen as a great alternative to thongs since they provide more coverage while still showcasing some skin.

They are especially good for ladies with an hourglass figure because they help create a smooth line from hip to thigh. If high-waisted, they provide good coverage on tummies while still being comfortable and flattering.

Briefs are perfect for everyday wear as they offer an excellent amount of support without compromising comfort or style. They are a great choice for both leisure activities and regular daily wear. Typically briefs are made from soft and breathable cotton that feels light against your skin.

Cheekini panties offer a little more coverage than a thong but still provide some cheek exposure. The shape of the panty is essentially the same as a regular brief but with shorter sides and back coverage. This provides for a higher rise in the front and just enough fabric in the back to cover half of the buttocks area.

Cheekinis are flattering on many different body types, although they generally look better on smaller figures such as petite women. If you have curvy hips or larger thighs, then you may want to consider going up one size to ensure that they don’t cut into your skin.

Cheekini panties can be suitable for everyday wear depending on how much exposure you’re comfortable with. These types of briefs are definitely sexier than traditional full coverage styles.

They are designed to feel like second skin against your skin so there's no annoying riding up or bunching throughout the day which is always nice! Most styles feature minimal seams which prevent them from being visible beneath clothing.

Cheekinis are great lingerie choices for special occasions when you want something extra special and sensual. Tthey look very attractive when paired with bras of similar materials. Because of their modest cut and high rise design, they help to define your waistline.

With their flattering shape and sexy cuts they provide just enough coverage while still revealing some skin in all the right places. The fabrics used also play an important role as they are usually sheer or lacy which adds an extra layer of sensuality when worn under clothing.

Whether it's a special date night at home or a romantic weekend getaway it's all about passion. It's all about the two of you and your love so choose more daring intimates such as sheer sets and bodystockings.

Bachelorette party - Relaxed and weeding-themed

Events such as bachelorette party or a bridal shower should not include revealing garments (as you are among friends, possibly in public) but rather wedding-themed. We recommend bridal corsets, veils and garters.

Valentine's Day - Red and minimal

Apart from red roses, lingerie is likely the best romantic gift for Valentine's Day. The theme is usually "anything red" as that is the color of love and passion. A good choice is to keep it simple and minimalistic. Choose a bra and panty set; a thong (without a top) and perhaps with open crotch; stockings and garter belt; or get risque with net bodystockings. Remember, everything in red.

Anniversary - Luxurious with fine fabrics

Celebrate your and commitment with luxurious items as a statement of the value of your love. Good choices are exclusive long gowns in lace or satin, preferably with a teddy underneath.

Wedding night - White and sheer

The ceremony might be over but the night is still young. Surprise your partner by wearing bridal lingerie on your wedding night, and make yourself feel special and extra confident. Popular items are white babydolls, sheer sets and wedding-themed stay-ups.

Honeymoon - Playful and accessible

A honeymoon is all about fun and play. Choose minimal and sheer intimates, preferably styles that are "not in the way", so to say. Good options are negligees, chemises and teddies with open crotch.

Men's guide to buying lingerie as gift

Trust us, women want sexy lingerie. They may say that they don't because they doubt themselves and think they are not beautiful enough for it. But luckily you know better.

It might be daunting to shop for sexy lingerie for your spouse on your own but a gift is not a gift unless it's a surprise. This lingerie guide for men will give you real and actionable tips.

What does she like?

It's important to take into account the recipient's personal preferences. Think about the styles and colors they tend to wear and choose something that you think they will feel comfortable and confident in.

If unsure, choose a babydoll och nightgown in lace.

Pay attention to their color preferences. If unsure choose black.

What's her size?

Check the label on your partner's panties. Panty size is a good predictor of what lingerie size will fit them. The size should be S, M, L, XL and so on. The cuts and fabrics used in nightwear are elastic and forgiving in terms on their fit, so there is a good chance the items you buy with fit even if the size selected is not perfectly accurate.

Avoid bras with bra cup sizes

Avoid buying bras with real bra cups. A real bra cup will have sizes like 70B, 32D etc. They are very difficult to to fit correctly, even women struggle with this. Bra sizes can differ between brands, so even if you read the size label of your spouse's bra and buy the same size it might not fit her. They are not elastic (the way other lingerie items are) and will be uncomfortable if not perfectly fitted.

Do buy bras with normal clothing sizes

Feel free to choose bras and sets that come in size S, M, L etc. These are "normal clothing sizes". The bras do not have real bra cups but are rather tops that look like a bra. The cups of these items are elastic and very forgiving.

Fabrics

If she has lingerie already, see if she likes silk, satin, lace, and cotton. If unsure choose semi-sheer lace or glossy satin for a more luxurious feeling. Beware of allergies as some people are allergic to synthetics such as nylon.

Lace and satin are your best choices.

What's the occasion?

Intimate wear can be a thoughtful gift for various occasions, such as Valentine's Day, birthdays, anniversaries, or even a special surprise. Think about the occasion and choose something that is fitting and appropriate.

Choose black or strong colored lingerie for birthdays and anniversaries. White for weddings nights and honeymoons and finally red for Valentine's.

Good spontanous gifts are black stockings and sets. For Valentine's, red bra and panties sets, nighties or chemises.

Bigger occassions (especially anniversaries) require something more substantial and exclusive such as a long nightgown or a corset. Choose darker colors.

Think beyond the traditional gift

If you want your gift to be a true and happy surprise, consider buying something that your spouse does not have. Lingerie is not only limited to bras and panties, there are many other options such as camisoles, teddies, robes and more, that can make a unique and special gift.

Gift wrap and card message

  • As a lace overlay on a solid-colored fabric. This creates a delicate and feminine look, and is often used in the creation of bras, briefs, and garter belts.
  • As a embroidered detail on a piece of lingerie, adding a touch of elegance and luxury.
  • As an applique, a decorative element that is sewn or otherwise attached to the fabric.

Care, washing and storing

Caring for your lingerie properly will help to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Read the care label! Each item garment will have its own specific care instructions. Pay special attention to any instructions regarding water temperature, detergent, and bleach.
  • Sort your lingerie by color and type (e.g. bras, underwear, hosiery, etc.) to prevent colors from bleeding and to ensure that delicate fabrics are washed separately from heavier, more durable fabrics.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid using bleach or fabric softener.
  • Depending on the type, it can either be hand-washed or machine washed. Delicate items like lace bras or silk undergarments should be hand washed using a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Heavier items like cotton bras can normally withstand being machine washed. If you're machine washing, be sure to use a delicate cycle and a thick laundry bag to protect the items.
  • Don't wring or out in a dryer. Instead, hang dry or lay flat to dry. Heat can cause shrinkage and damage to delicate fabrics.
  • Fold or hang and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing lingerie in damp or humid areas, as this can lead to mildew and damage to the fabric.

Please keep in mind that the recommendations above are just general. If the care label says something else, then follow it.

Size charts

Please note that there are two charts below. The first in centimeters and the second in inches.

Use a measuring tape to determine which size you should select. If between sizes, choose the larger one.

The bust measurement is done around your bust at its fullest point. If your bust is saggy, measure while wearing an unpadded bra. Under bust is measured directy under the bust.

Waist is measured at in slimmest part. Hips at their widest.

You should also know your bra size as most lingerie items have a range of bust sizes that they fit. To find your bra size, you will need to measure your band size (the measurement around your ribcage, just under your bust) and your cup size (the measurement around your bust at its fullest point).
