The CDC (am. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends the use of masks, including homemade ones, to limit the spread of covid-19. Reference listed below. [2]

Face mask / mouth cover made of three layers hydrophobic (water repellent) material with silver ions. The fabric is a nonwoven fiber textile that is often used in hygienic products and in health care. Silver ions are used in medicine and in consumer products for its inhibitory effects on microbes. However, the inhibitory effect does not guaranteed and should not be mistaken for absolute protection.

The is not a mask or respirator of the type N95/N99. It should not be considered as a safe protection against the coronavirus. Self-isolation and rigorous hand washing are still considered to be most important. The mask aims to limit the spread of the virus to others, which we can unconsciously do even if we have no symptoms. [2]

Please note that we do not make any recommendations. Instead, we presenting relevant references below. You have to decide for yourself whether you want to use masks, for what purpose and to inform yourself about how to best manage them.

According to recommendations from various international health organizations, masks can help limit the spread of covid-19, even if the mask is not certified for medical use. [1, 2]

The mask is not certified medical protective equipment. The mask is not a substitute for other precautions such as social distancing or washing your hands frequently.

The mask should not be soaked as its filtering ability can be affected negatively. The mask is intended for single use but, if necessary, there are general recommendations for cleaning disposable masks. [3]

The following cleaning procedures are recommended for single use masks; direct sunlight (without window glass in between) for at least 30 minutes; hot air oven at 70°C/160°F for at least one hour; steaming in rice cooker for at least 30 minutes. [3] Note that this does not guarantee a complete disinfection.

We are not giving any medical advice. You must evaluate and decide by yourself if you want to use masks. We urge you not to blindly trust what we write. If in doubt, consult with independent sources. There is a concern that masks can give a false sense of security and that is why it is so important to inform yourself on the subject.
